The Kolkatta Majherhat Bridge Collapse | Has human life been compromised at the hands of deceitful contractors?
A flyover (bridge) has collapsed in Kolkata in India leaving 5 people killed & 15 stuck in the rubble, according to local reports.
Kolkata, previously known as Calcutta, is the capital of India’s State of West Bengal.
An account on the Telegraph India website narrates that a month’s repair work on the bridge was accomplished in just 3 days in August. This will now be scrutinized as the suspicions are many at this stage. Has human life been compromised at the hands of deceitful contractors?
The publication elaborates further that, with a VIP visit to the city anticipated, work on the forty-year-old flyover was rushed. Is this an acceptable explanation by any means? Does this mean that a bridge was window dressed (not repaired) just to play eye candy for a visiting VIP!
Pictures show several vehicles crumpled under the Majherhat bridge, which is reported to have been revamped last month “in 3 days”. Now how does anyone repair a bridge of this size in 3 days – many seem to be asking at this stage!
People are frantically trying to save those hidden & buried with firefighters using cutting tools to try & free survivors from the debris.
7 private contract workers of the under-construction Kolkata Metro line are dreaded to be trapped.
8 injured people have been rushed to the Kolkatta Medical Research Institute & 9 to the nearby SSKM Medical College & Hospital.
Army medics have been deployed to help as well.
Derek O’Brien, lawmaker of the state’s ruling party (Congress) tweeted and reassured: “Cranes already put to use. Fire fighters are on the spot. Disaster management teams from all available departments at work.”
Local media reports that the bridge on Diamond Harbour Road came down around four forty five on Tuesday evening, which is coincides with the rush hour for the city.
The bridge was erected over some rail tracks in Alipur, one of the oldest areas of the city. The area is encircled by semi-constructed structures, scaffolding & pillars.
On one hand no one would say how the flyover repaired so promptly and on the other hand the doubts in everyone’s mind cannot be suppressed!
The official statement at this point in time seems to state that “It is not known what caused the collapse, but officials have pledged a full investigation”.
