Michael blew aground near Mexico Beach, a holiday town about midway along the Panhandle, a lightly inhabited, two hundred-mile stretch of white-sand beach resorts, fishing towns and military bases.

Its winds roaring, it assaulted the coastline with sideways-blown showers, powerful draughts and booming waves, flooded streets, bent trees, stripped away limbs and leaves and sent building wreckage flying. Flareups apparently instigated by transformers could be heard.

More than 375k people up and down the Gulf Coast were advised to evacuate. But emergency authorities complained that many people ignored the warnings and appeared to think they could ride it out.
