Due to the forecast of extensive rains on November 22, a holiday has been declared for educational institutions including all schools and colleges of Chennai and Kancheepuram district. As per IMD’s prediction, the sky’s state is likely to be generally overcast while sporadic rain and thundershowers.

The northeast monsoon commenced on Tuesday afternoon and continued into the late hours of Wednesday night. The estimate for Thursday suggests that the temperatures are likely to be in the range of 25 degrees (max) and 23 degrees (min) Celcius.

The heavy downpours are expected due to the noticeable building of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. Several other regions of Tamil Nadu will also receive reasonable rainfall. On Wednesday too many schools and colleges had remained shut or closed early owing to heavy rains in some districts. The wind gusts are expected to be very high on Thursday. It is anticipated by the IMD that the wind speed is likely to be around 10 km/h for most of the day.

Chennai resident weatherman, Pradeep John, said that the depression along the Bay of Bengal will cross Chennai-Puducherry coast on Thursday sometime in the evening. The rainstorm is not likely to strengthen nor are there are any cloudbursts anticipated. While a cyclonic situation is not expected a severe storms in parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are well on the cards. In light of the emerging weather situation, Madras University and TN Dr. Ambedkar Law University have posponed the examinations scheduled for Thursday.

This storm comes after Cyclone Gaja that hit the Tamil Nadu & Puducherry coast a few days ago. The cyclone caused plainfull damage to property while 11 people lost their lives.  This current storm which appears to be a follow up to the Gaja has disrupted the relief efforts for victims of the Cyclone.
