Rafael Nadal Catches Italian Journalist Nodding Off | Funny Rafael Nadal Ubaldo Scanagatta incident
One of the remarkable things about the Australian Open for media and fans alike is getting up and close with tennis legends such as Rafael Nadal.
And this being the reality for most of us, some international journalists, who have the great pleasure of following Grand Slams around the world, an audience with the greatest Spaniard tennis star of all times might not be so exciting.
Sounds crazy but that seemed to be the case on Monday for Italian journalist Ubaldo Scanagatta, when Nadal spotted him dozing off while he was amidst an interview about his 1st round win over Australian James Duckworth. Watch this funny Rafael Nadal Ubaldo Scanagatta incident below:
With a mischievous look on his face Nadal whispered “look” in Spanish, while pointing his head over to the snoozing journalist.
The room erupted with laughter and through laughs, Nadal said: “It is not exciting today … Buongiorno (good morning in Italian) Ubaldo”.
Later on Nadal was heard saying “No Problem” as Scanagatta apologised.
It appeared on Scanagatta’s own website UBITennis that the Italian journalist was actually jet-lagged, having only reached Melbourne from Europe on Sunday afternoon.
Nadal’s 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 win over the Australian James Duckworth was the 1st men’s clash on Rod Laver Arena for the tournament.
The world no.2 won easily, but given the way his rival Duckworth was aggressive at the net following his big serve and the scorching conditions, Nadal’s job was made harder at times despite what appears to be a straight sets victory.
Nadal will encounter another Aussie, Matt Ebden, in the 2nd round on Wednesday. Ebden overcome German Jan-Lennard Struff in 4 sets on Monday.
