Coast Guard officials said 4 bodies have been retrieved and up to thirty people are said to be unaccounted for after a 75-foot commercial diving boat exploded in flames near the shoreline of Santa Cruz Island, Calif., early Monday.

34 of them aboard the boat, identified as the Conception, were believed to be sleeping below deck when the fire broke out in the early hours of the morning.

Coast guard Authorities continued their search Monday for probable survivors, as the Santa Barbara County Sheriff s coroner office prepared for a mass fatality incident.

5 crew members who were awake jumped off the boat, which was 20 yards off shore of the north side of Santa Cruz Island close to the Ventura County coast, as per the information provided by the U.S.

Coast Guard Capt.

Monica Rochester.

The boat left from its base in Santa Barbara Harbour on Saturday morning and was slated to return Monday about 5 p.m.

Truth Aquatics, the firm that owns Conception, is a reliable name in the diving world, running numerous boats off the Channel Islands.

Owner Glen Fritzler won the California Scuba Service accolade earlier this year for his ground-breaking work in the industry.
