Coronavirus Outbreak in China Leads to Global Panic as cases are rapidly on the rise in China and other Asian nations.
The number of coronavirus patients rose on Monday (20th Jan 2020) to over 200 from 62, with new cases reported in Beijing and other Asian countries.
Over the weekend, a 3rd patient in China died of the pneumonia-like virus.
Coronavirus appears to have originated in Wuhan (Central China) and this is the city where the highest number of new cases have been reported.
Experts are of the opinion that the recent spike in cases is mostly due to more testing and looking for cases.
The outbreak has come at the busiest travel periods of the year with millions of people journeying during the Chinese New Year holiday season.
Meanwhile, South Korea has seen its first case — a 35-year-old Chinese female from Wuhan who tested positive for the disease. She had arrived a day earlier from Wuhan. The woman has been quarantined, according to The Associated Press.
The outbreak has put the airports all over the world on high alert. The United States has also begun screening for sick travelers at three major U.S. airports.
This deadly virus belongs to the large family of coronaviruses that can lead to illnesses ranging from the common cold to more fatal diseases such as the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which took the life of nearly 800 people globally during a 2002-2003 outbreak that also originated in China.
The head of an expert team appointed by the Chinese government have informed that human-to-human transmission has been confirmed in an outbreak of a new coronavirus.
