Why Hardik Pandya & R Ashwin should have done more | India vs England 4th Test

Sanjay Bangar (India batting coach) feels Hardik Pandya & Ravichandran Ashwin were guilty of donating their wickets rather softly in the 4th Test against England. As a result of their soft dismissals the team let let go of a strong position. Bangar said India could have been in a much stronger position had Pandya & Ashwin played with better foresight. Whereas India had to settle for just 273 on Friday in response to England’s first innings score of 246.

While Ashwin was back in the pavilion with just 1 run to his credit, Pandya got out after adding just 4 runs to the total. “…at that juncture amidst the backdrop of Pujara’s flourishing knock, they could have easily executed their innings differently.

Moeen Ali spun England back into the contest on a fluctuating day with five wickets. At 142 for 2, India were well-poised to build a solid 1st-innings lead having bowled England out for just 246. But Sam Curran had the better of Virat Kohli just before off-spinner Ali put his dancing shoes on and cut through the middle-order with a fabulous spell.

Chesteshwar Pujara, however, is praiseworthy as he stood out with his majestic ton (132 not out) that gave India a lead of 27 runs. Pujara batted intensely with the tail & added close to 80 runs with the support of Ishant Sharma & Jasprit Bumrah, and resurrected the Indian 1st innings to a respectable total.

The batting coach also had words of gratitude for Jasprit Bumrah & Ishant Sharma for playing the anchor with Pujara to help India take atleast a small lead.
