Truth About The Indonesian Tsunami
The lethal tsunami in Indonesia was triggered by a chunk of the Anak Krakatau volcano breaking of into the ocean, as per official release.
A natural disaster of this size has finally opened the eyes of Indonesian government as they now have called for a new early warning system that can detect volcanic eruptions.
At least 373 people were killed and many concrete structures were seriously damaged when the tsunami struck, literally without any warning, along the edge of the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra islands late last weekend.
The collapse of a large chunk of the Anak Krakatau caused an underwater landslide and eventually culminated into this catastrophic tsunami, as explained by Dwikorita Karnawati, the head of the meteorological agency.
The tsunami warning was not triggered due to the fact that it was caused by volcanic activity rather than an earthquake, as interpreted by Indonesian scientists. No tremors or anything else suspicious was noticed or felt by Coastal residents . There were literally no warning signs before waves of up to three metres high surged in.
Hundreds of military workforce and social workers spent Monday scouring beaches strewn with debris in search of survivors. Close to 2000 people were injured and approx. 600 homes, 60 shops and 420 vessels smashed when the tsunami struck.
The Indonesian disaster agency was cited stating that the country had no early warning system for landslides or volcanic eruptions. They admitted that the current early warning system is for earthquake activity and the event that just occurred was outside the scope of detection of the warning system currently in use.
Amidst the sorrow there is anger as many blame the Indonesian government for not having in place a warning system that could have detected such an event.
Indonesia houses 13% of the worlds volcanoes. This is the highest concentration of volcanoes anywhere in the world. Even to a layman it doesn’t make sense as to why this government has been lackadaisical in investing in a proper warning system! Compromising the safety of it’s citizens in this manner stands proof of a failed government.
