Debutante Indian boxer Manju Rani had a great run at the Women’s World Championships which concluded today at Ulan-Ude, Russia.
Manju ended with a silver medal on Sunday after she went down to Russia’s Ekaterina Paltceva in the light flyweight (48kg) final.
The Haryana-boxer, who was seeded 6th, was defeated by the 2nd seeded local favourite in the first final of the day.
19 year old Rani, was the only Indian to make the finals after Lovlina Borgohain (69kg), Jamuna Boro (54kg) and 6 time champion M.C. Mary Kom (51kg) settled for bronze medals.
Rani’s rise to fame happened earlier this year when she won the national crown for Punjab. This is ironic because she wasn’t selected earlier by her own home state of Haryana.
Rani has been born and brought up in the Rithal Phogat village (Rohtak district of Haryana).
