Volcano gushes out lava on Spain’s La Palma island: La Palma, with about 85000 inhabitants, is one of 8 volcanic islands in Spain’s Canary Islands archipelago off Africa’s north-western coast.
At their closest point, the islands are sixty miles from Morocco.
A 4.2-magnitude quake was logged before the volcanic outbreak, which occurred at a place in an area known as Cabeza de Vaca on the western slope as the ridge slopes to the coast.
As the eruptions sustained two open mouths spurted bright red lava into the air that then rolled in tight streams down the mountain slope.
Mass scale evacuation has been ongoing, flights cancelled, 100 homes destroyed by lava.
The eruption, which occurred at 3:15pm local time, caused lava to shoot into the air. Reuters reported that the island could split into two and cause a tsunami on the east coast of North and South America and Southern Europe and Africa.
The last volcanic episode in La Palma was 50 years ago and it lasted over three weeks.
The last volcanic explosion on all the Canary Islands occurred underwater off the coast of El Hierro island in 2011 and that lasted five months.
Volcanologist Vicente Soler of Spain’s Higher Council believes that the material is quite fluid and that the lava flows will reach the sea sooner or later.
The scientific committee of the Volcano Risk Prevention Plan has always maintained that this part of the island’s southwest coast was at risk for landslips, tremors and rock falls.
