Was Navjot Singh Sidhu Justified in Hugging Pakistan Army Chief Qamar Bajwa? Is He Lying To Cover Up His Conduct In Pakistan?

Sushma Swaraj
is visibly irritated with Navjot Singh Sidhu for ‘his conduct’ in Pakistan.

Sushma Swaraj drew attention to Navjot Singh Sidhu’s statements on Sikh pilgrimage and the Kartarpur corridor and termed them as “unnecessarily politicized”

Punjab cabinet minister and erstwhile cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu had obtained special political permission to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Pakistan Prime Minister-elect Imran Khan, at Attari-Wagah border in Attari. Sushma Swaraj had given him her consent with the condition that he not rake up any controversy and will conduct himself as a responsible citizen of India.

However, as things turned out the external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj has reprimanded Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu for his “conduct” in Pakistan and for grossly misusing his political clearance for the “private visit” by hugging Pakistan army chief. Qamar Bajwa is the very same Pakistan army chief who is responsible for giving the orders to kill Indian soldiers. The nation is angered with this Navjot Singh Sidhu Qamar Bajwa hug!.

Sidhu has yet again drawn negative attention to himself for hugging Pakistan army chief and for his announcements on the Sikh pilgrimage issue. Sidhu has known to be a friend of Imran Khan’s since their cricketing years and he was the only Indian politician who was granted political clearance to attend Imran Khan’s swearing-in as Prime Minister.

Did Sidhu mess up this opportunity? An opportunity which if used wisely could have resulted in a mood smoothening scenario instead of this?

Sidhu tried to justify his hug by claiming that Pakistan had allowed direct access to Sikh pilgrims to the ancient Kartarpur sahib gurudwara on the Guru Nanak Dev’s 550th birth anniversary. In fact on September 7 Sidhu had clearly stated that Pakistan had decided to permit Sikh pilgrims direct admission to the historic Sikh Shrine situated on the Pakistani side of the border.

The Shiromani Akali Dal, the BJP’s coalition partner, had dismissed the above as false.

Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal was so upset about this development that she actually wrote to Sushma Swaraj enquiring if there was any truth in the claims made by Sidhu. In here reply Sushma Swaraj had clearly stated that no such agreement has been reached and that there wasn’t any written communication either.

Navjot Singh Sidhu claims that he hugged the Pakistani Army Chief Qamar Bajwa at the spur of the moment because he had conveyed to him the news about allowing Sikh pilgrims to crossover to visit the shrine. Was this significant gesture justification enough for Navjot Singh Sidhu to hug the Pakistani Army Chief Qamar Bajwa? The other question is whether Navjot Singh Sidhu is just making this up in order to defend his conduct? Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal has been quite vocal on TV about her belief in the latter.
