Can diabetic medication reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease : A new study has found that folks taking certain drugs to lower blood glucose for type 2 diabetes had less amyloid within the brain, a biomarker of Alzheimer’s disease .

The findings of the study were published within the journal ‘American Academy of Neurology’.

The study also found people taking these drugs, called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, showed slower cognitive decline than people within the other two groups.

In people with type 2 diabetes, the body not efficiently uses insulin to regulate blood glucose .

Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, also referred to as gliptins, are often prescribed when other diabetes drugs don’t work.

they assist control blood glucose when combined with diet and exercise.

“People with diabetes are shown to possess a better risk of Alzheimer’s disease , possibly thanks to high blood glucose levels, which are linked to the buildup of amyloid-beta within the brain,” said study author Phil Hyu Lee, MD, PhD, of Yonsei University College of drugs in Seoul, South Korea .
