Rome escalator metro accident leaves Russian soccer fans hurt | What caused the escalator to give way?
An escalator in a Rome metro station gave way a short while back injuring 20 people, quite a few of them CSKA Moscow soccer fans, as stated by the Italian police.
One person was very badly hurt in the accident at the city-centre Repubblica metro station, as narrated by a few bystanders.
State television RAI transmitted a video of the event that showed a packed stairway suddenly speed up, hurtling people down the escalator. Italian broadcasters reported some soccer supporters were trapped between the steps in the metal plates.
The station was packed with Russian fans at the time as they headed towards their common destination, the Rome’s Olympic Stadium where CSKA Moscow were scheduled to take on AS Roma in the Champions League match up a short while later.
La Repubblica website reported that the escalator gave way while the fans were singing and chanting and apparently the damage occurred when they started to jump up and down on it.
