Eleven deceased, multiple injured in mass shooting at Squirrel Hill synagogue; authorities will investigate as hate crime

Eleven individuals are dead and 6 more are wounded — including 4 police personnel — after a mass shooting at the Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighbourhood Saturday morning.

The shooter, who officers said had an assault-style rifle and 3 guns, is in custody, Pittsburgh Police report. Officials have confirmed he is 46 year old Robert Bowers, who has lived in the South Hills. He is in Allegheny General Hospital in reasonable condition with several gunshot wounds, officials said.

Gunfire exploded as a baby-naming rite was getting underway, officials confirmed.

At a press meeting Saturday afternoon, Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said officers were dispatched at 9:55 a.m. He established that there were eleven fatalities, and 6 injuries, including 4 cops. No kids were wounded, he said. Gov. Tom Wolf said confirmed that the incident was being considered as a hate crime.

There was an initial clash in which 2 officers were injured, Mr. Hissrich said. 2 more who are part of the SWAT team were injured in a later clash, Pittsburgh Police Chief Scott Schubert stated at the press conference. Officials alleged that the suspect was acting alone.
